What is the purpose of Life Coaching?
Coaching focuses on optimizing your life. As a coaching client, you will discover and develop your most grandiose ambitions; identify and eviscerate the obstacles, and shift the current (already not too shabby!) trajectory of your life toward greater personal and professional success, nimble work/life balance, and effortless resilience.
In other words, the purpose of coaching is to help you get from "well" to "spectacular"!
How long does coaching take?
Unlike psychotherapy, coaching is a long-term relationship. In psychotherapy, the focus is on addressing a specific symptom or problem, and therapeutic relationship comes to an end once the issue is resolved. In coaching, the focus is on ongoing re-evaluation and fine-tuning of your life. Times of change and transition call for weekly meetings, whereas periods of consolidation and stability may put coaching on hiatus.
In other words, psychotherapy is towing a car that won't start to a mechanic; coaching is taking your purrin' like-a-kitten roadster in for a scheduled oil change.
Is coaching confidential?
Coaching relationship, while implicitly confidential (as in: I respect your privacy), is not legally sealed. However, since no stigma is attached to the noble pursuit of one's utmost potential, clients seldom wish to conceal their participation!
How are coaching boundaries different from therapy boundaries?
Coaching relationship transcends the office walls. Coaches work with their clients in a variety of formats, including at the office, on the phone, on-line, and in the milieu (that means in person but not at the office). Many of my clients love getting coached on a hike when weather permits!
Unlike therapists and patients, coaches and clients can (and do) maintain parallel relationships with each other outside of their coaching collaboration - as long as neither party takes advantage of or manipulates the other. I have become friends with some of my clients, and have even hired them in turn for the services they provide that I needed!
How do I pick a "good one"?
A coach is a co-conspirator of your future triumphs! Take your time and do your homework. This will be an important relationship in your life, take the selection process seriously. Look up your candidates' online presence. Seek feedback from past clients, if you know any. Check the status of any relevant professional licenses they may hold.
If your area of coaching focus is professional advancement in a corporate setting - seek a coach with management background. If your interpersonal skills or self-management need work - a clinician coach will be able to offer relevant insights. If you are a smartie - you will be needing a coach smart enough to keep up with you.
Bottom-line: Coaching is not a regulated profession, you will have to be diligent and creative in verifying your candidates' bona fides.
